1. Mushrooms or Fungal Conks at the Base
Shelf-like fungal growths, often called conks, growing at the base of a trunk or along major roots are one of the clearest signs of internal decay. In Florida, ganoderma butt rot is especially common on live oaks and other hardwoods, appearing as reddish-brown, varnished-looking shelf fungi at or near the soil line. By the time these conks are visible, the fungus has typically been breaking down structural wood inside the trunk and root system for years — the tree can look healthy in the canopy while the base has lost significant strength. 2. Canopy Dieback
Dieback shows up as branches, usually starting at the outer canopy or crown top, that fail to leaf out or drop leaves out of season while the rest of the tree looks normal. Scattered dieback across 20% or more of the canopy often points to root stress, disease, or drought damage below ground that has not yet caught up with the rest of the tree. It is worth documenting dieback with dated photos so a pattern of progression is easy to spot.
3. A Sudden or Worsening Lean
Some species naturally grow with a lean and have done so safely for decades. The concern is a lean that develops suddenly or increases over weeks or months, especially after heavy rain saturates the soil. A newly developed lean, particularly paired with soil cracking or heaving on the side opposite the lean, often means root plate failure is underway and the tree could fail completely with the next strong wind.
4. Root Damage or Soil Heaving
Cracked or lifted soil in a ring around the trunk, especially opposite the direction of a lean, indicates the root plate is beginning to pull out of the ground. Construction work, trenching for utilities or irrigation, and repeated soil compaction from vehicles or heavy equipment near the root zone are common causes of root damage that may not show above-ground symptoms for a year or more.
5. Large Cracks or Included Bark
Vertical cracks running down the trunk, especially ones that open and close slightly in wind, signal a structural failure point. Included bark — where two major limbs grow so closely together that bark gets pinched between them instead of forming a normal branch union — creates a weak point that often fails at that junction during storms, even on trees that otherwise look robust.
6. A Hollow Trunk and 7. Bark Loss or Cracking Sap Flow
A hollow sound when tapped, or a visible cavity at the base or in a major limb, means the tree has lost structural wood to decay. A hollow trunk does not automatically mean a tree must come down — many trees survive for years with moderate hollowing — but it does mean a professional assessment of remaining wall thickness is worth doing, particularly for trees near a home, driveway, or Dunedin-area pool cage.
Patches of bark that are peeling, cracked, or missing entirely, sometimes accompanied by dark, oozing sap, often indicate an active infection or borer damage underneath. This is especially worth watching on stressed trees after drought or storm damage, since a weakened tree is more susceptible to secondary pests and disease.
What to Do If You Spot These Signs
If a tree near your home in Largo or anywhere else in Pinellas County shows two or more of these signs, especially in combination with proximity to a structure, treat it as a priority rather than something to monitor casually through another storm season.
A tree caught in the early stages of decline is often far cheaper to address than one that has progressed to genuine hazard status. Early intervention might mean cabling, selective pruning, or simply monitoring on a set schedule, while a tree that has been ignored through several seasons of dieback or root damage frequently ends up requiring full removal on an emergency basis, which costs more than a planned visit and carries higher risk to whatever structure sits underneath.
