Florida's State Tree Is Under Real Disease Pressure
The cabbage, or sabal, palm is Florida's official state tree and one of the most common palms across Pinellas County landscapes, but it is not immune to disease. Two conditions account for most of the palm decline we see on service calls in Clearwater: lethal bronzing, a phytoplasma disease, and ganoderma butt rot, a fungal disease that affects palms and hardwoods alike. Knowing the difference matters, because one is a candidate for early intervention and the other generally is not.
What Is Lethal Bronzing?
Lethal bronzing is caused by a phytoplasma, a bacteria-like organism that lives in the palm's vascular tissue, and it is spread by a planthopper insect vector that feeds on infected palms and carries the pathogen to healthy ones. The disease was previously known as Texas Phoenix Palm Decline before researchers confirmed it was the same pathogen affecting a broader range of palm species, including cabbage palm, queen palm, and Phoenix date palms. It has been documented across much of peninsular Florida, including the Tampa Bay area.
Recognizing the Symptoms
- Premature fruit drop, even when fruit is still green, is often the earliest sign
- Older, lower fronds discolor to a bronze or reddish-brown color and die, progressing upward through the canopy over weeks to months
- Newer emerging spear leaves may fail to open properly or die while still closed
- Once the bud (the growing tip) dies, the entire canopy collapses and the palm cannot recover
- Progression from first symptoms to canopy collapse typically runs a few months, though it varies by species and palm health
How It Spreads
The planthopper vector, Haplaxius crudus, moves the phytoplasma between palms as it feeds, which means lethal bronzing can spread within a neighborhood or a single property with multiple palms over a planting season or two. There is no cure once a palm shows canopy symptoms. Preventive antibiotic trunk injections exist and can protect high-value, still-healthy palms in an area with confirmed nearby cases, but injections must be repeated on a regular schedule and are not a rescue treatment for a palm already showing bronzing fronds.
Ganoderma Butt Rot: A Different Threat
Ganoderma butt rot is a fungal disease, distinct from lethal bronzing, that decays the lower trunk of palms and many hardwood species including live oak. It typically presents as a shelf-like conk near the base of the trunk, and by the time that conk is visible the fungus has usually been breaking down internal wood for a long period already. There is no effective fungicide treatment for ganoderma once established — management is limited to monitoring and, for palms near structures, removal before structural failure occurs. Treat or Remove: How We Decide
For lethal bronzing, the decision point is timing — a palm caught with only premature fruit drop and no bronzing fronds yet may be a reasonable candidate for preventive injection, while a palm with bronzing progressing through the canopy or a collapsed bud has no treatment option and should be removed before it becomes a fall hazard. For ganoderma, the decision is based on trunk integrity and proximity to structures rather than disease stage, since there is no treatment to weigh against removal. Protecting Healthy Palms on Your Property
If you have multiple palms and one has been confirmed positive for lethal bronzing, it is reasonable to have the remaining palms evaluated for preventive injection, particularly high-value specimen palms near a home entrance or pool area, since the planthopper vector can move between palms on the same property. Keeping palms generally healthy — avoiding over-pruning, managing irrigation to prevent drought stress, and not wounding trunks with lawn equipment — also reduces overall susceptibility to secondary problems, even though it does not prevent phytoplasma infection outright.
